Designing a new home doesn't always mean starting over. In fact, some of the most…
When the Unexpected Choice Is the Right One
There are certain design rules we hear so often that they start to feel like fact. Small spaces need light colors. Dark finishes make a room feel smaller. If a room has no natural light, the goal should be to brighten it.
Sometimes, the better choice is to do the opposite.

In a windowless powder bath at the TIPLER Showcase Home, we knew there was no reason to pretend the room was something it wasn’t. Rather than trying to visually brighten the space, we leaned into the lack of natural light with dark, textural walls and a deliberately moody palette.
A full-height mirror brings reflection and dimension into the room without taking away from that darker atmosphere. Above the vanity, sculptural glass pendants by SKLO become an unexpected focal point, their translucent forms standing out against the deep walls.
The result is a small room that doesn’t try to feel bigger. Instead, its scale and darkness become part of what makes it memorable.
At TIPLER Design, we’re less interested in following a design rule simply because it’s familiar. We’re interested in understanding the space in front of us and making choices that strengthen what it can be.
Sometimes that means recognizing that the thing you’re tempted to work against is exactly the thing worth embracing.
